Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) Training Course for Insulation Installers & Related Trades
Gas Safety Awareness for Insulation Installers is an essential training program for operatives installing cavity wall, loft, or external wall insulation. These courses ensure that insulation work does not inadvertently create hazardous conditions, such as blocking flues or ventilation.
Core Objectives of the Training
The primary goal is to educate non-gas operatives (insulation installers, surveyors, and external cladding specialists) on how to recognize and mitigate gas-related risks.
Preventing Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning: Training focuses on recognizing the dangers of blocked flues and ventilators, which can cause lethal CO buildup.
Appliance Identification: Installers learn to identify different types of gas and fossil fuel appliances and their specific ventilation requirements.
Safe Operation Checks: Operatives are taught how to perform basic pre- and post-installation safety checks, such as flue-flow and spillage testing.
Regulatory Compliance: The training ensures compliance with Regulation 8 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, which prohibits any work that might affect the safe operation of existing gas fittings.
Course Content & Structure
Duration: Typically a one-day course combining theoretical instruction and a written assessment.
Key Topics Covered:
Combustion characteristics and visual signs of danger.
Types of chimney systems (flues) and their operation.
Procedures for dealing with gas escapes or suspected carbon monoxide leaks.
On-site precautionary measures and risk assessments.
Certification: On successful completion, candidates receive a certificate of competency, typically valid for 5 years.
Cavity Wall & Loft Insulation Installers: To ensure insulation does not block necessary air vents or flue terminals.
External Cladding Installers: To avoid covering vents or damaging gas pipework during exterior work.
Surveyors and Managers: To correctly assess risks before a project begins.
Important Note: This is an awareness course and does not qualify an individual to carry out actual gas work (such as installing or repairing boilers); only Gas Safe Registered engineers are legally permitted to perform such tasks.
